Landfill gas utilisation
Landfill gas extraction from old landfill
Project Summary
The project takes on the challenge of converting methane gas generated at an older closed landfill and integrating the energy from conversion with the handling of various types of waste.
Residual product processing in Boden has the vision of contributing to circular systems where residual energy and residual materials are utilized in symbiosis with the establishment of a wetland area and improved water quality in Lake Constance. The project intends to install equipment and systems for measuring the amount of landfill gas at Brändkläppen and measure and evaluate the energy production linked to seasons and temperatures over an annual cycle. The results will form the basis for the implementation of a system for the recovery and utilization of the energy that can be recovered from an old landfill. The system will be integrated with other initiatives within the Boden Municipality and the Region, thus contributing to the recovery of residual energy in circular flows.
At Brändkläppen in Boden there is an older, defunct landfill where there is currently a non-functioning system for collecting landfill gas. The landfill leaks methane, which is a powerful greenhouse gas that negatively affects the climate and the environment.
The project contributes to changing the landfill gas system by installing equipment that enables landfill gas to be collected and converted into carbon dioxide and energy, which contributes to reduced climate impact and utilization of residual energy. The project contributes to stimulating solutions that contribute to the efficient use of energy in circular flows or processes.
The project is part of a larger circular environmental commitment for REBAB in a larger context where the disposal of landfill gas is an important first step in achieving positive changes in the environment at Brändkläppen and in the municipality of Boden.
Future Eco coordinates the project and REBAB is the project owner. The project started in February 2026 and will end in December 2027.
The project is funded by REBAB together with the European Union and Region Norrbotten.
